Endless views to all four winds
Riisitunturi National Park is one of the most photographed natural destinations in Finland—and for good reason. Rising above the forests of Posio, its rounded fells offer sweeping views over the wilderness, Lake Kitkajärvi, and the distant fells.
Whether you visit beneath the Midnight Sun, during the autumn colours or in the heart of winter when snow transforms the spruce trees into unusual white sculptures, Riisitunturi changes character with every season.
Why Visit Riisitunturi National Park?
Riisitunturi is famous for its breathtaking panoramic views and unique natural beauty. Old spruce forests, peaceful slopes, and open fell landscapes create an unforgettable setting for hiking in every season.
The park is especially known for its "tykky" snow, where thick layers of snow and frost cover the trees, creating the famous "snow monsters" that have become one of Lapland's most iconic winter landscapes.
With an experienced local guide, you'll discover hidden viewpoints, learn about the region's nature and wildlife, and experience the quiet rhythm of northern Finland.
Summer in Riisitunturi
From late spring to autumn, Riisitunturi offers peaceful hiking through lush forests, colourful bogs, and open fell landscapes. From the higher open areas, there are wide views across Lake Kitkajärvi and the surrounding forests.
The park is an excellent destination for photographers, nature lovers, and anyone seeking the tranquillity of Finnish wilderness.
Autumn Colours
During Ruska, usually from September to early October, Riisitunturi bursts into vibrant shades of red, orange, and gold. The combination of autumn colours, forests, fells and lakes makes September a particularly rewarding time for hiking and photography.
Riisitunturi in Winter
In winter, heavy snow and frost transform Riisitunturi's spruce trees into sculptural white forms. The open fell landscapes look out across vast snow-covered forests, while the short days of midwinter bring constantly changing light.
Guided snowshoe hikes allow you to explore this winter wonderland at a relaxed pace, following quiet trails through one of Finland's most spectacular snowy landscapes.
The Sky Above Riisitunturi
Riisitunturi is not only about snow-covered trees and fell landscapes. With open views in every direction and very little artificial light, the sky is often an important part of the experience.
In winter, the light can change remarkably during just a few hours. Depending on the season, time of day and weather, you may experience sunrise and sunset, pastel-coloured skies, the deep blue moment of twilight, a full moon over the snowy forest or a clear night filled with stars or northern lights.
Sunrise and Sunset
During midwinter, the sun stays low above the horizon and sunrise and sunset are relatively close together. The low light can colour the snow and sky with soft shades of pink, peach, violet and gold.
These pastel “cotton candy skies” are particularly beautiful against Riisitunturi's white, snow-covered spruce trees.
As the days grow longer towards spring, sunrise and sunset move further apart, but the low northern sun can still create beautiful light across the fells.
Blue Hour
After sunset – and before sunrise – Riisitunturi enters the blue hour, or sininen hetki in Finnish.
The landscape gradually changes from pastel colours to shades of blue. Snow reflects the remaining light from the sky, and on clear winter days the blue moment can be surprisingly bright.
For photographers, this transition between daylight and darkness is often one of the most interesting times to be on the fell.
Northern Lights
On dark, clear nights, it is possible to see the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) from Riisitunturi.
The open fell landscape offers wide views of the northern sky, while the snow-covered trees create a distinctive foreground for watching and photographing the aurora.
Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon and can never be guaranteed. Their visibility depends on solar activity, cloud cover and other conditions.
Full Moon and Moonlight
A full moon can transform Riisitunturi into a very different landscape.
When the sky is clear, moonlight reflects from the snow and illuminates the fell, forests and snow-covered trees with soft silver and blue tones. Around the full moon, the snowy landscape can be surprisingly bright even in the middle of the night.
Winter full-moon nights are particularly suitable for snowshoeing and night photography.
Stargazing
Away from the lights of towns and villages, Riisitunturi also offers good conditions for stargazing on clear nights.
During the darkest months, stars can be seen above the snowy fell for many hours. On a clear night, the combination of stars, moonlight, snow and – with some luck – Northern Lights makes Riisitunturi worth experiencing after dark as well as during the day.
Which moment would you choose?
There is no single best time to experience Riisitunturi.
Daylight: choose it for the fell landscape, snowy forests and a straightforward first visit.
Sunrise: arrive in time to watch the landscape become lighter and, if conditions allow, catch the first sunlight.
Sunset: enjoy low afternoon light and the transition towards twilight. Soft pastel colours may appear before sunset as well.
Blue moment: explore in the soft twilight before sunrise or after sunset. The timing and duration change through the winter.
Night sky: choose darker moon phases for stargazing, or ask about moonlit snow around the full moon. Visible Northern Lights also depend on aurora activity.
Every day is different, and clouds and changing weather are part of the northern landscape.
With a private guide, the departure time can be planned around the light and conditions you would like to experience – whether your priority is photography, sunrise, sunset, blue hour, a full moon or simply spending time in the winter landscape.
Wildlife and Nature
Riisitunturi National Park is home to a rich variety of northern nature. Most of the time, we see signs of wildlife rather than the animals themselves. Tracks in the snow often reveal who has passed through the forest before us. Wild animals usually prefer to keep their distance and avoid being seen – although there is a good chance they are aware of us and watching quietly from somewhere further away.
Learning to notice tracks and other small signs of wildlife is part of experiencing the nature of Riisitunturi. Sometimes, what we don't see can be just as interesting as what we do.
Explore Riisitunturi with a Local Guide
A guided experience can be as simple as a short snowshoeing tour to enjoy the winter light, or a longer day exploring quieter forests and less-visited parts of the national park.
Private tours can be planned around photography, sunrise, sunset, blue hour or a full moon. For those who want to go further, longer routes give us time to leave the most visited areas behind and explore a different side of Riisitunturi.
The route, pace and timing are always adapted to the season, weather and conditions of the day.
