What is the blue moment?
The blue moment, or blue hour, is a period of twilight when the sun is below the horizon but still illuminates the sky.
In a snowy winter landscape, this indirect light is reflected by the snow and often gives the surroundings a distinctive blue tone.
In northern Finland during midwinter, twilight lasts for a long time. The blue moment can therefore feel much longer than the name “blue hour” suggests.
What time does the sun rise and set?
The exact times depend on the date.
Around Christmas in Kuusamo, sunrise is approximately 10:30–10:40 and sunset approximately 13:30–13:40.
After the winter solstice, the days gradually begin to grow longer.
We time the experience so that we are already outdoors during the morning twilight and remain at Riisitunturi through sunset and the afternoon blue moment.
Is it completely dark before sunrise and after sunset?
No.
This is one of the interesting features of the northern winter.
Before sunrise and after sunset, there is a long period of twilight. Around Christmas, civil twilight begins roughly around 09:00 and continues until approximately 15:10 in the afternoon.
During this time, the snowy landscape reflects the remaining light from the sky. In suitable conditions, we can move outdoors without a headlamp for a surprisingly long time before sunrise and after sunset.
We still carry headlamps for changing conditions and the darker parts of the day.
Will we definitely see the sunrise and sunset?
No.
Sunrise and sunset happen every day, but clouds, snowfall and visibility determine whether we can actually see the sun.
The experience is designed around the changing light of the whole winter day rather than a guarantee of seeing the sun itself.
What is tykkylumi?
Tykkylumi is a Finnish term for the heavy accumulation of snow and frozen moisture on trees.
Riisitunturi is particularly well known for its winter forests where spruce trees can become covered in thick layers of snow.
The amount and appearance of snow on the trees always depend on the winter conditions.
Do I need previous snowshoeing experience?
No.
Your guide will show you how to use the equipment before we start.
A moderate level of fitness is required because this is a full-day outdoor adventure in natural winter terrain.

Yes.
A warm outdoor lunch by the fire and hot wild berry juice are included.
