Frequently asked questions
Do I need previous snowshoeing experience?
No. You don't need previous snowshoeing experience. Your guide will show you how to use the snowshoes and poles before we start.
However, this is not the easiest of our snowshoe tours. The route includes uphill and downhill sections, and moving through fresh or deep snow can be physically demanding. A moderate level of fitness is recommended.
Will we see the sunrise?
Hopefully – but nature makes that decision.
On New Year's Day, we start while it is still dark and experience the gradual change from darkness to the blue light of the Arctic morning as we climb Valtavaara.
Clear skies and a visible sunrise cannot be guaranteed. Snowfall, clouds and changing winter weather are all part of the experience.
How cold can it be on Valtavaara?
January in Kuusamo can be very cold, and conditions on Valtavaara may be colder and windier than in Ruka Village.
Please wear proper winter clothing, warm winter boots, mittens or gloves and a hat, and dress in layers.
If you don't have suitable Arctic winter clothing, you can rent a winter outfit and boots from Winterent in Ruka.

Where is Valtavaara?
Valtavaara is located next to Ruka in Kuusamo, Northern Finland. It is the highest point in Kuusamo and is known for its snow-covered spruce forests and views over the surrounding fell and forest landscape.
Our meeting point is at the Valtavaara/Saarua parking area. Pick-up and drop-off are also available in the Ruka area.
Do I need to bring my own snowshoes or equipment?
No. Snowshoes, poles and a headlamp are included in the experience.
You only need to bring suitable winter clothing and boots, any personal medication you may need and, if you like, a camera or phone.
Is breakfast included?
Yes. During the experience, we stop at a traditional Finnish kota and enjoy a warm smoked reindeer sandwich prepared by the fire together with hot wild berry juice.
We also raise a glass of alcohol-free sparkling spruce shoot drink to welcome the new year.

Can you pick me up from my accommodation in Ruka?
Yes. Pick-up and drop-off are available in the Ruka area.

Is the tour suitable for children?
The minimum age for this experience is 12 years.
The tour lasts approximately four hours and includes climbing and descending on snowshoes in winter conditions, so children should be comfortable with longer outdoor activities in cold weather.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Snow, wind, cold temperatures and limited visibility are normal parts of winter in Valtavaara.
The tour is designed to take place in winter conditions, and your guide assesses the conditions and safety throughout the experience.
In exceptional conditions where the tour cannot be operated safely, MyTrail will contact participants regarding the arrangements.
