Frequently Asked Questions
What is the winter solstice?
The winter solstice marks the shortest day and longest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. After the solstice, the amount of daylight gradually begins to increase again. In 2026, the winter solstice occurs on 21 December at 22:50 local time in Finland.
What is kaamos?
Kaamos is a Finnish word associated with the darkest period of the northern winter.
Above the Arctic Circle, the polar night means that the sun does not rise above the horizon for a period of time. Riisitunturi National Park is in Lapland, but lies slightly south of the Arctic Circle, so the sun still rises here, but around the winter solstice it remains above the horizon for less than three hours.
The long twilight, blue light and darkness are an essential part of the winter experience in Lapland.
Will we really be outside at 22:50?
That is the plan.
The schedule is designed so that we reach the higher landscapes of Riisitunturi before 22:50 and have time to stop for the winter solstice.
The exact location depends on snow, weather and the pace of the group.
Do I need previous snowshoeing experience?
No.
Your guide will show you how to use the snowshoes and poles before we start.
The route includes climbing and descending in natural winter terrain, so a moderate level of fitness is required.
Will we see the Northern Lights?
They are possible, but cannot be guaranteed.
Riisitunturi is really dark spot and offers good conditions for observing the night sky. If the Northern Lights appear during our adventure, we will take time to enjoy them.
This is not a Northern Lights hunt, however. The winter solstice and the Arctic night are the main focus of the experience.
How cold can it be?
December nights in Kuusamo can be very cold, and Riisitunturi may be colder and windier than Ruka Village.
Warm winter clothing, insulated boots, gloves or mittens and a warm hat are essential.
Is transportation from Ruka and Kuusamo center included?
Yes.
Pick-up and drop-off in the Ruka area and Kuusamo center are included. Please provide the name and address of your accommodation when booking, so we plan pick-up timing according to that.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Snowfall, wind, cold temperatures and limited visibility are normal winter conditions.
Your guide assesses the conditions and adapts the route when necessary.
If exceptional conditions make it unsafe to operate the experience, we will contact participants regarding the available alternatives.
